About Africano Waltham

Africano Waltham is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting African immigrant families, youth, and elders in Waltham and surrounding communities. We create safe, welcoming spaces where people can learn, connect, grow, and feel a sense of belonging.

At the heart of our work is a simple belief: when families are supported, children thrive, and communities grow stronger.

Our Story

Africano Waltham was founded out of lived experience — not theory.

Our work is shaped by the real challenges immigrant families face when adjusting to life in a new country, and by the belief that no one should have to walk that journey alone.

Our Beginnings

Africano Waltham was founded in August 2010 to support African immigrant children and families as they prepared to enter school and navigate life in the United States.

What began as a small, grassroots effort quickly became a trusted community space — a place where families could find guidance, encouragement, and connection.

Founder’s Story

Juliet Najjumba,
Founder & Executive Director

My name is Juliet Najjumba, and the story of Africano Waltham is deeply connected to my own story.

I came to the United States in 2010 as a mother with two young children. Although I had family here, there was so much I did not know. I didn’t understand the systems. I didn’t know where to go for help. I didn’t know anyone who truly understood how things worked.

I saw many fellow immigrants struggling — parents working long hours, children adjusting to new schools and cultures, and grandparents caring for young children while facing language barriers and isolation. These grandparents loved and nurtured the children deeply, but often stayed indoors, unable to access libraries, community spaces, or activities that could help children learn and socialize.

I had walked this path largely on my own. It was lonely, confusing, and difficult — but it also gave me clarity.

Before coming to the U.S., I had started an organization in Uganda focused on empowering women and youth through education, skills, and voice. I wanted to bring that same spirit to Waltham.

I founded Africano Waltham so that African immigrant children and families would not have to navigate this journey alone — so they could feel seen, supported, and prepared to succeed.

Then to Now: Our Impact

The twelve original children who began at Africano Waltham in its early years have since graduated from high school and enrolled in college. Another thirteen students graduated in 2022.

These young people are now on paths toward productive, successful lives — not because the road was easy, but because someone believed in them.

Today, Africano Waltham continues to serve families across generations, offering programs that respond directly to community needs.
